What to expect after delivery
On delivery, the defibrillator belongs to your community and becomes your collective responsibility. You will need to appoint a guardian, this could be yourself or someone from the community, someone we can register as the main point of contact. You will be expected to arrange the installation of the cabinet, though this is easier than you think. A local handyman or certified installer will usually do it for free.
The appointed community guardian is expected to take care of three things:
- Register the defibrillator with the national defibrillator network, the Circuit.
- Contact us straight away if the defibrillator beeps or if you notice any issues.
- Replace any materials as soon as you receive them from us.
For the first four years: no costs, no worries, no surprises. After 3 years, you will receive a new fundraising offer to cover any costs beyond year four.
Why a defib?
> A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart. It helps get the heart beating again when someone is in sudden cardiac arrest and their heart has stopped.
> The Philips Defib is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyse the heart's rhythm, guides you through CPR and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. The Philips Defib delivers the quickest shock therapy off defibrillators on the market.
> A sudden cardiac arrest is fatal unless treated right away with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and a defibrillator.
Getting a defibrillator for your community is vital because:
80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in or around homes. More than 60,000 in the UK each year!
Currently less than 1 in 10 survive due to a lack of 24/7 accessible defibs in residential areas.
The ambulance often doesn't arrive in time for a good chance of survival.
Without immediate intervention with a defibrillator most cardiac arrests are fatal. Every minute without CPR and a defibrillator, reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%.
Having a defibrillator and knowing how to perform CPR will give people in your community a better chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.
